Administrator … A person who has full oversight of a group’s operations. This initially is the person who formed the group.
Adult Member’s Private Control Center … This is where an adult member is taken upon loging in on the FSB toolbar. It displays personal information and gives access and control over different facets of the site. Bio facts and a personal avatar are optional. From other places in the site after loging in, it may be accessed on the toolbar at My Account/Control Center.
Adult Member’s Public Home Page … This is the public portion of the member’s information that may be viewed by other members and visitors. It includes any optional bio information and avatar. It also provides access to the stories the member/author has posted. It is accessed from searching for the member’s pen name in Directories/Adult Members and will also appear if the member’s pen name is clicked on anywhere else in the site.
Author … Any member who has posted at least one story.
Avatar … A small picture that appears publicly next to the member’s Pen Name and several other places in the site. Including an avatar is optional. It can be changed under My Account/Profile/Change Avatar.
Barred … Should FSB determine that a member is in violation of our guidelines, that person can be barred from membership.
Blocked … An author has the right to assign a “blocked” status to another member. The blocked member may rank the author’s stories but may not post reviews on them or post messages for the member/author. Any existing messages or reviews will disappear when the member is blocked. Unblocking the member will not reinstate any previous messages or reviews. When you read a review from the member you want to block, click on the Block Member button by the pen name.
Blog … A derivation from the words Web Log. It refers to how material is presented on a web site. Common usage refers to a posting of comments in a diary or journal format.
Bloggers … Members who have blog accounts hosted at another website. The blogs may be read on the FSB site and can be accessed through Directories/Bloggers. A member may add a blogger to his or her My Favorite Bloggers list. The bloggers chosen most often by members as favorites will be featured on our home page.
Bulletin Board … The public dialog box that shows beneath a member’s pen name on his or her Public Profile, Message Center and Stories list. The member may show current information that he or she wants other members to know. This is in addition to the biographical data and message center.
Contact Us … Provides links to the email addresses for FSB departments. It can be found at Tools/Contact Us.
Control Center … This is a member’s private page from which he or she may manage the account and functions. It can be found under My Account/Control Center.
Conversion … When a junior member reaches age eighteen, an option will be made available to convert to an adult membership. Once required information is received, the member will have a new adult Private Control Center and the existing Public Profile information will be updated.
Directories … Drop-down lists on the toolbar that show adult and junior member Public Home Pages, Groups and members’ personal blog sites.
Favorite Junior Authors, Adult Authors, Bloggers and Groups … These four lists on the FSB Home Page are updated automatically. They show by pen name the authors and bloggers who have been added most often as member favorites. The most popular groups will also be displayed by group name. The top thirty six are listed in each category. Clicking a name in either list takes you to that author’s list of stories or to the list of groups.
Friends … Each member has a private category called Friends that is accessed through the member’s My Account/Friends. This is a list of FSB members who may be accessed more quickly and easily than repeatedly having to search for them through a directory. No one else may see the contents of this list. When the Administrator of a Private Group wants to invite another member to join the group, the invitation may only be made to a member within the Administrator’s personal Friends list.

Groups … Where members with common interests may share information. Groups may be searched at Directories/Groups.
ISBN … The International Standard Book Number unique to a specific edition. Books published after 1972 had ten digits. Books after 2006 have thirteen digits. The ISBN number changes with different editions of the same book and are different for the hardcover and paperback versions.
Junior Member … Children and young adults under the age of eighteen may have a membership account if sponsored by an adult member. The adult member must make application to add the junior member. The junior member accounts are listed on the sponsoring member’s Private Control Center under Sponsored Junior Members.
Junior Member’s Private Control Center … This is where a junior member is taken upon logging in from the FSB Home Page. It displays personal information and gives access and control over different facets of the site. The difference from the adult’s Control Center is that a junior member may not change the optional bio information, replace an avatar, modify the contact email address nor obtain a new password. These functions are controlled by the sponsoring adult member.
Junior Member’s Public Home Page … This is the portion of the junior member’s information that may be viewed by other members and visitors. It includes any optional bio information and avatar. It also provides access to the stories the junior member/author has posted. It is accessed from searching for the member’s pen name in Directories/Junior Members and will also appear if the junior member’s pen name is clicked on anywhere else in the site.
Links … Insertions in a story that take a reader to another web site. A link is distinguished by the word being underlined.
Log in … This is an option on the FSB tool bar allowing members to access their Private Control Centers. They log in by entering their user names and passwords.
Market Place … A section of the FSB Home Page that displays various merchant products and services.
Member … Anyone at least eighteen years old who has completed the New Member’s application, accepted the FSB Membership Agreement, chosen a pen name, provided required information and provided a password.
Membership Agreement … Guidelines under which an adult member agrees to use the site.
Member Benefits … The ability to post stories they have written, rank and write reviews of other member/author’s stories, form and join groups and leave messages for other members.
Message Center … A feature that allows one member to write a message to another member. It is accessed under My Account/Message Center.
Moderator … A person selected by a group administrator for the purpose of editing and maintaining the group’s information. An FSB Moderator has the ability and authority to review public and private postings on the site to ensure suitability.
My Invitations … This prints out a sheet of special invitations that may be handed out to friends, family and people along the way. Each invitation includes the FSB logo and the link to find the member/author’s stories on the FSB site. It is accessed under My Account/Control Center/Print Invitations.
Notifications … This is an FSB function that allows a member to know when new stories or messages are available. Notifications may be either by email or shown on the FSB toolbar. Some are limited to toolbar only. Modifications to the settings may be made at My Account/Settings/Notifications.
Password … A private combination of letters and numbers without spaces that a member uses to log in. Passwords are case sensitive. They may be changed at My Account/Settings/Email-Password.
Pen Name … Each member is shown and known by a pen. Adults may use their actual names for a pen name. Junior members are advised to use fictitious pen names for personal privacy. The pen name is public information. It can be changed at My Account/Control Center/Profile.
Profile … A member’s information both public and private used to establish and maintain an FSB membership.
Published Author … A person who has a book for sale that has an ISBN.
Publisher’s Blog … Periodic comments posted by the publisher about the site. The blogs are shown by date entered with the most current at the top.
Ranking … A member may rank a story from one to five stars. The average ranking is shown for each story.
Rating … A story rating system for indicating what minimum age a reader should be to read a particular story.
Review … Comments posted by a member about a member/author’s story. A member may post only one comment per story.
Settings … An area of a member’s Private Control Center where modifications may be made to the email address, password and notifications. This is also where a membership account may be deleted. It is accessed through My Account/Settings
Share This .. A tool bar on each page that allows a member to save a page or story to favorites, and to share the page or story with friends and contacts on other social media sites.
Social Media Site … A place on the internet where people can share information, interact and communicate with each other. Samples of this are Facebook, MySpace and Twitter.
Statistics … These reflect important numerical facts about the site. They are shown in the left column of the Home Page.
Story Category … The genre encompassing the story’s content. One primary category is shown for each posted story. An optional second and third category may be used. The Excerpts category is reserved for the works of published authors. This may be accessed under Reading a Story/Story Categories.
Story Scrapbookers … Member/authors who include drawings, graphics, photos and/or video clips to enhance or highlight elements of their stories.
Submit an Excerpt … A member who is a Published Author may post an excerpt from one of his or her books that is currently in publication. The primary story category to be used is Excerpts. Up to two secondary categories may be included. The introduction to the excerpt should include the “story behind the book”. At the end of each excerpt will be a “Buy This Book” button. The excerpts may be found on the member/author’s Public Home Page and on the tool bar under Reading a Story/Story Categories/Excerpts. To access Excerpt submission, go to My Account/Control Center/Submit an Excerpt.
Submit a Story … A member may access this option through My Account/Control Center/Submit a Story.
User Name … The name a member wants to use for logging in to the member’s Private Control Center. It is to be in lower case letters and numbers with no spaces in the name. A user name may not be used by more than one member and may not be changed.
Visitor … Anyone who enters the web site. A visitor may navigate the site, read stories and make purchases from the Market Place.
Writers Forum … A place for writers to interact and discuss writing.
